It was great to see lots of enjoyment with the wall in action!

Backwell Scouts were off rafting on the River Yeo to complete their permit assessments. We lent them our rafting kit - brand new barrels included- and Alex went down to support as a safety kayaker. A couple of great fun, successful sessions where all leaders involved achieved their permits.

A very popular session with lots of Cubs and Scouts coming along to take part on the Friday evening. Some of the more experienced members covered the safety talk to make sure everyone was up to speed and we got on with lots of rounds, games and fun for all.
Scouts Hector and Adam scored 80 points each in the scoring rounds with a lot of improved scores from the previous sessions for others.

Concorde and Compass Packs had their Summer Camp at Hush Woods this year. 1NAA were on hand to support running archery and tomahawk sessions along with rafting on the local river.
The Cubs took the the tomahawks really well and felt happy to be the first Cubs in the Group to use them. The archery was great fun with some Cubs becoming quite the proficient archers and others enjoying learning the basics having their first experience using a bow.
The Cubs practiced their square lashings to build their rafts and proceeded to have a very wet time in the river- everyone jumped back in afterwards for a refreshing swim.

A couple of instructors from 1NAA headed up to North Wales for some walking in the mountains. Supporting a group of Explorers from Crystal Palace Panther ESU and Coulsdon Falcon ESU in their first taste of mountainous terrain. Following some theory in the hut we split into groups with one going up Tryfan and the other up the Glyders- lots was learnt over the course of the long weekend in map reading, team work and resilience.

Raptor Troops Summer Camp included the introduction of tomahawk throwing sessions to 1NAA.
They camped in a farmers field and were able to run several sessions over the week for the Scouts to have a go and try out some new games. The new targets were donated from a friendly tree surgeon and are perfect for the job- we added circle targets later for even more of a challenge as well. In conjunction we ran archery sessions- practicing skills and playing games.

Jack Warry Cub Pack had a great evening at the River Yeo building and racing their rafts.
They needed pioneering poles and big barrels and after learning how to tie a square lashing cracked on with building their rafts in teams.
Once kitted up with helmets, buoyancy aids and paddles they took to the water- all the rafts lasted for a paddle upstream from the jetty and resulted in all the Cubs going for a swim afterwards!
Thanks to the Raptor Troop Scouts who came along to help run the session and supervise the Cubs in the water.

Raptor Scout Troop took part in 3 kayaking sessions during their Summer Program. Sessions were held at the River Yeo in Congresbury- for some Scouts it was their first ever time in a kayak and for other older Scouts they are well practiced from all their previous sessions and journeys.
We travelled up river past the swans and peoples dogs enjoying a swim in the river, played some games- with a few capsizes! Before heading back to the jetty for wet games and falling in.
The Scouts did a great job helping with loading and unloading the boats- supporting each other getting in and out of the water and generally had a great time on the water.
More badges and memories for all involved.

The wind, rain and stormy conditions in the day and week leading up to our first aerial runway session didn't stop us having a great evening. In fact when we arrived the rain had stopped and cleared up for the remainder of the night. We had Beavers and Cubs from River Severn, Concorde and Compass along with Charlie and Kara from Raptor Troop who came along to help out.
They all got kitted up with a harness each, made their way over the bridge to the top of the tower and the fun commenced- all getting loads of goes whizzing down the runway.
Looking forward to the next one- see you there!

Cubs from all 3 packs (Concorde, Compass & Jack Warry) enjoyed 2 archery sessions held at the Scout HQ. They have all made huge progress towards their stage 1 archery challenges and are now very competent in the basics of archery. For some it was a refresher from previous sessions and others it was learning new knowledge to improve their technique. They all learnt how important it is to set their feet in a good stance to give them the correct posture for shooting and the importance of consistency in scoring high.
The second group played a new game called Make a Monster where they 'won' body points for their monsters by hitting the different colours on the target- if you hit a gold twice you got two heads!
We all shot 2 ends of 6 arrows as a competition and to be able to gauge their improvement in future sessions. We had the highest score by Alfie of 79- great work.

Jack Warry Cubs took part in an intro to archery session on their pack night. They all learnt how to be safe on the range, load their own arrows and hit the target. They all made improvements in their scores in the short time they had and some are looking forward to their session on Saturday to expand their skills further in games and competitions. Thanks to Lily from Raptor Troop for helping the Cubs on the session.

Two Scout leaders from Raptor Troop in 1st Nailsea attended the Glenny Wood Aerial Runway Training along with a group of other leaders in Gordano District. They learnt the appropriate knots, how to put on harnesses, how to set up the runway and run a session.
This means the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in the Group can now make use of the runway on pack nights and weekends!

The second tournament was held for the polo pirates for this season. The team trained hard and this showed in the results. 15 goals were scored in total and only 6 goals against! The most impressive match was against Hamble Sea Scouts who bought their A team to this tournament. We won after a thrilling match 3-1. After a short break we were to play Bridgend who also had a strong team this tournament. This was a nail-biting match after an early 1-1 draw. Bridgend scored a lucky goal making them the winners by one goal! The pirates continued to work hard for the rest of the match attacking at every opportunity but it wasn't to be. The final whistle blew with a 2-1 win the Bridgend. Overall, the Pirates won 4 out of 5 matches and are in prime position to win the league with in total 9 out of 10 wins with 36 goals for and only 12 goals against. Well done team! Merry Christmas to all and we look forward to the next tournament.

The Polo Pirates to a team of 7 along to the first tournament of the season. This tournament is unusually early for the season so we had only been back at training for a few weeks. This also meant that other teams may have not had a lot of time to train their new players so we weren't sure of the competition until we arrived.
I am very pleased to report that the team played very well. We have worked very hard in training to learn more skills and tactics and have developed a team that can communicate and play effectively.
